I truly appreciate
your devotion to the ethereal,
but I’ve found something
I like much better.
It’s tricky, you see,
and down a difficult road
full of opportunities
to turn back.
This road is despair,
manifested at its most potent hour,
the very same hour
that the journeyman is most weak.
Here’s the deal.
With one realization comes another
in a chain of logic that can lead
to only one conclusion (unless you turn back).
The cosmic, microcosmic, and absolute
inconsequentiality of everything
is such a profoundly saddening realization
to find at the end of this long, scary road
That, once you reach it, the option to turn back
is no longer there.
It’s as though your soul and mind
have fallen though a trapdoor.
Now, you have two new options.
Having survived the grueling path
to get here, all for naught, you can
take the easy way out, or overcome the task before you.
Knowing now that everything is worthless,
useless, meaningless, and hopeless (including you),
the easiest choice is to make a date with death
and hope your date goes well.
It is for this reason that existentialists
are rather hard to come by.
However, if you overcome that infinite despair,
you realize one last thing which makes it worthwhile.
You learn that, while your life
might not mean anything,
living is certainly fun.
And that is just enough to keep you going,
Now with a newfound philosophy
that life should be lived
with the single goal of having fun
and being happy as often as possible,
For if you’re going to be miserable
and let yourself grow lame,
you might as well have taken that easy way out
when you first had your chance,
But with happiness, there’s always more to be had
and more places to find it,
and life becomes one big game
that’s played between moments of joy.

i think your point is very true, im a christian more by birth than by choice, i neither state there is or isnt a god, im still not sure, but i dont like the politics of it all, but i know that partying and enjoying myself is one dang good reason to live life, so i live it for the sake of having fun, and helping others enjoy their lives...... |

Good one =)
I guess when I think about it, your philosophy is perfectly valid and I wouldn't complain if I was in your shoes or your frame of mind. I think a person can have a very fulfilled life if they seek to do things that in the end will increase their happiness. But the main selfish, greedy reason I choose to believe in God is for the sake of those moments just before death - the thought of just blinking out into nothing terrifies me. So even if there is no God and that's what we all end up doing, I'll continue to believe that my existence has a higher purpose outside of myself. At least by possibly deluding myself I have sort of rough guidelines to follow in life that can't lead me wrong (ie considering all my actions in light of God's will).
*Cough* so back to the poem... I hope you're not depressing yourself too much with all these thoughts. But if you're truly happy then it's all good. |
