In Every Blade of Grass and Birdsong

Contributed by ShadowDaughter on Wednesday, 28th July 2004 @ 01:36:54 PM in AEST
Topic: goodbyepoetry

soon, dear, you'll learn to cope
and you'll learn to dry your eyes
and over time
you'll learn to wipe away the tears
before they even appear
and eventually, there really will be none at all
and you'll learn to say, "I'm fine"
and sound convincing
so that they'll walk away
and eventually, you really will be fine
and you'll learn how to fake a smile
with your mouth, not your eyes,
and laugh on the outside
and eventually, you really will smile again

and you'll learn how to think less about him
and not have his presence fill your days
and you'll learn how to live on without him
but dear, you will never forget him

and in the back of your mind,
in the sunlight, in the rain,
in every blade of grass and birdsong,
he will always be there
watching over you
and though you will someday not cry
and someday be fine
and someday smile
and someday survive on your own,

in the the back of your mind,
in the sunlight, in the rain,
in every blade of grass and birdsong,

he will always be there.

This was written with tremendous compassion and understanding of loss. I LOVED the title, and the sentiment woven in the poem. Terrific -

You are so wise for your years, so talented, with so much to say and to give. Thanks for giving some of that to our friend when she is in need.

Nora, you may be young in physical years but you are an old soul inside, just like me.

I will not only cherish this poem forever, I feel a very strong connection to it.

It hit me straight in the heart and I can't stop the emotion.

There was a poem read at the ceremony. It was entitled "I did not die" I can't remember who wrote it but I do know that he would have loved this poem and what it said.

Everything is trapped inside of me and the loss has overwhelmed me at times.

The greatest one person i've ever known, my guide, confidante, teacher and the giant who read me stories when I was five has left.

Yet I know that every thing you said in your beautiful, touching & wonderful poem is all true.

Thank you Nora, I cherish this.

Kie

This is the an amazing gift... a treasure. What everyone has said here is most definitely true... you are a wonderful, old soul walking around in a young person's frame - it is the only possible explanation for your talent, your level of knowing and your amazing compassion. Everyone should have a friend like you, Nora. You are as much a gift (more!) as this poem is - and THIS is beautiful.

This is yet another example of your incredible ability to speak from the very core of your heart and to move the reader in unbelievable ways.

With heartfelt hugs to both you and Kie-
SNM

Oh what a lovely and loving thing for you to do for Kie.
Your poem was so true and so endearing in every way......I shall never forget your terminology........in every blade of grass and birdsong........because that's just the way it is. You learn to adjust......but he will always be there.......as part of your soul.....that part never departs!
This is lovely indeed!
Poetic hugs to you two kie and you too
