How Have You Been?

Contributed by srsuckow on Tuesday, 27th July 2004 @ 07:48:48 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

I met an old friend on the street.
We said our hellos, and she asked how I'd been.
I told her about the boss who never lets up on me,
the professor who screwed me over on that last exam,
the kid brother and sister who are exhaustingly adorable,
the older sister who is getting married to a man
twice her age and going blind,
the friend who got dumped by a man
twice her age who had never gotten that divorce he had promised her,
the boyfriend who is proving to be worthless in every situation,
and how tired I was of this weather.
I asked in return how she had been.
She responded with a pained, "Fine,"
followed by "It was nice bumping into you."
And she walked away.
I must have forgotten that "How have you been?"
no longer requires a genuine response.
It's simply a polite extension of hello.

Tis a plastic world we live in now, no time, no cares, just all into selves. Next time nod and walk on as they do, how sad today is, and there only so few.

Very insightful write, thanks for sharing.

Very true. I ask old friends with genuine sincerity, and it makes me feel horrible when all they can tell me is okay, or fine, I want to know if I ask them. Then they return the How have you been, and what is the only thing I can tell them, after their short response? "Just Fine" Very lovely and true write

Thanks for sharing this... how sad... but true it is of our society today... no one seems to have the time to just chat for awhile... we're all in such a rush and to get to where?
