The Family Wall
A child sits and looks at the wall
Something goes down her neck and she looks up towards the window
Someone close to her is gone
She’s had this feeling before, when her grandparents left only a few days before
She knows right away it’s her great grandfather
Thoughts and pieces of what she can remember of the first time she saw him goes thru her mind
A smaller, more bent version of her grandfather, with sunken eyes and shuffling steps
Pride reeks from him, along with happiness when he looks at her, a child still small enough to sit on her grandmothers’ lap
The other visits, shorter each time, with the wondering, “Will he be there when I graduate from high school?”
The was no, he wouldn’t be
Still sitting on the floor, she remembers the last words she wanted to say to him
“Tell Great Granddaddy I love him, Grandma” she remembers saying only days ago
“May God bless that child” was the answer
Then, a few weeks later, he’s gone
Finally standing, she wonders what he was thinking those last few days in the hospital, what he saw on the way to Heaven, whether or not he’d be looking after her
Until she too finally went home
A few days later, her grandmother called, and even before the woman could get a word out, she knew
“Your Great Grandfather died the past weekend”
Softly in her head, the girl murmured ‘I had a feeling that he had’
No sense of loss
Nothing to tell
You’ll see them soon
In both dreams and in your mind
They never really leave you alone
Always there
So enjoy it
Until you see them again
