Tonight

Tonight
I want to be free
To feel the wind upon my face
To cool the fire from within
Giving me breath
When I cannot breathe
Taking with it
The weight of my heart

Just for tonight
I want it to rain
Let every drop
Fall from heaven
As fast as they can reach the earth
Let it cover my face
So to hide the rain drops of my own
To wash away
The dirt that stains my hands

Only tonight
Take away my sleep
So that I do not miss
One moment of freedom
Postpone the morning
For as long as you can
Without light
nobody will see
The words I cannot hide

Let this night surround me
Give me space to be alone
Not to hear a voice
Not to hear a sound
The grass as my bed
The sky my blanket
Hold me in this moment
And may it never escape my mind

Turn off this world
Turn out the lights
Make way for a new and better life

On this night
I am to become
The answers to my prayers
Invisible to the critical eye
But at peace for the first time
For a lifetime

Tonight
