A Horse of War
July 21, 2003
A creature far larger,
More grand and graceful, too.
A beautiful animal, but put through...
So much pain,
So much loss.
When this innocent stag is unwanted and dragged,
Into the line, of fire and death,
Simply to carry the violence,
Of soldier, to save him his breath.
In the battle, this war,
Where the horses are used for not more,
Than just a means to get there faster,
To cause more damage and disaster.
She looks back, on days,
Of a wild horse run and lazy graze,
Thinking why was I chosen,
Why I am here?
I have done nothing,
To deserve all this fear.
The soldiers that ride on my back,
Worse than jockeys on a track,
But I only want to go,
Go home.
When the men are lined,
And the soldiers prepare for attack,
When the skies are dense,
From the gunsmoke so black,
The heroin under, the victim of war,
Watches her rider fall bleeding to the floor.
The smoke is clearing, but the pain is searing.
In the range of fire,
Where her master sat on her bare back,
This horse was shot,
And now only sees black.
She looks back, on days,
Of a wild horse run and lazy graze,
Thinking why was I chosen,
Why I am here?
I have done nothing,
To deserve all this fear.
And now I lay dying,
Unknowing and crying.
