Ode For My Son

ODE FOR MY SON…(©Peter Sprenkeler)

Torn apart by the merciless circumstances of life,
Only fleeting moments in those empty years we shared.
He was too young…I was too bitter and angry,
To reinforce…despite the separation…that for each other we cared.

Too many years have passed…the words remain unsaid,
Emotional reparations for both of us long overdue.
Life and all its complexities and circumstance is a thief,
Excuses no longer valid…a relationship we must renew.

The years raced by…he…busily building his life,
And I…desperately trying to rebuild a life so torn.
My son knew me not…only heightened my pain,
A young man now…all I had missed just left me so forlorn.

Those mistakes we must both now leave well behind,
And focus on the love that has been there for so long.
I have forgiven myself…and look with hope to the future,
The past was a dirge…the future a wonderful song.

He is so much like me…I am surprised at the likeness,
A young man now…a young man I yearn to know.
There is indeed time to rekindle…time to rebuild,
A father son relationship I feel we both need to sow.

We both hold the piece missing from each others lives,
And I am certain he is as anxious as I,
To refit that component…and make our lives whole,
No longer are we prepared to let this vital moment pass by.

Even at this moment thousands of kilometers apart,
I feel that unbreakable thread warming my soul.
A joint realization exists…that love’s lamp still glows,
Distance and circumstance will no longer exact on it a toll.

(For you Jim…I can’t change the past…but I can strive to make the future for us much closer…as it should be…love from your Dad)

I like the honesty in this poem.
We both hold the piece missing from each others lives-
very well-expressed.

This is a heartful and meaningful write that tells me you will both have some golden moments to treasure. Blessing to you both. A very powerful piece indeed.
