Friendships never end

I have my secrets as well,
And understand what you say.
Though our paths have been much different,
The forest was the same.
I know there are things
That you cannot tell even me.
Secrets so painful
That daylight they will never see.
I fell for you once,
But my reasons were unclear.
It wasn't an infatuation
It was because I held our friendship dear.
I tried to stand in the shadows,
And guard you from love untrue.
Then the day came
When I could no longer protect you.
I know that it sounds weird
But I wanted more to be your friend.
Because love sometimes closes,
Yet friendships never end.
