they said i'd be fine

Topic: DarkPoetry

(they said i'd be fine
they said i'd be ok
but it never got better
it never went away)

hate
anger
depression
all attributed to teen angst
"he'll get over it
all kids go through it"
but i'm not a kid anymore
and nothing has changed

"it isn't a cry for help
he just wants attention
so you must ignore it
it's just a phase"
all the while it grew worse
it just got darker inside
the sun set in my mind
and never returned

they said i'd be fine
they said i'd be ok
but it never got better
it never went away

a walking middle finger
they tried so hard to ignore
and by the time they got the point
it was far too late

zombie pills offered as cure
i smiled and pretended to swallow
and they never even noticed
that nothing ever changed
at least not for the better

zombie pills spit back at them
as they lived, oblivious
i wanted help then
but they just shut their eyes
and now i'll never accept
any hand that they offer

they said i'd be fine
they said i'd be ok
but it never got better
and it NEVER went away
now they all wonder why
i'm still "not all there"
never once thinking
it's because they never cared
and when i rise
and when i raze
the blame will fall on me
and try as i might
they'll never understand
this is what i was raised to be

(they'll just never understand
i am what they made me)

they said i'd be fine
they said i'd be ok
but i never got better
and now i won't go away

From personal experience I'm inclined to think that the persona speaking this poem IS just calling for attention, and that he/she is so wrapped up in blaming "them" for their depression that they'll NEVER get better. But the stanza you repeat throughout is pretty catchy.

Powerful words. I'm not out to say whether you're attention-seeking or not, as you've caught it here without trying.

Its a Bitter and Twisted write, for sure, and I liked the 'walking middle finger' reference, too.

Keep writing.
