(Through the eyes of a Yankee fan. "The Best Team")
When he feels the Houston air,
He lets down his guard.
Because his love comes from the field,
In his own “backyard”.
And every time he thinks he’s done being young,
He’s catches himself having fun.
But the bliss passes, as does the summer,
So he turns himself back home.
On a diamond full of memories,
He spent his good years.
He stills hears,
The crowd cheering in his ears.
And it’s depressing that
He can’t forget
The songs the crowd sings…
And every time he thinks he’s done being young,
He’s catches himself having fun.
But the bliss passes, as does the summer,
So he turns himself back home.
Is your career over?
You’ve gotten some four-leaf clover…
You feel it getting colder
When its late fall…
Do you still remember,
April through November,
You and Pettitte were members,
The best team in baseball…
We’ve got new pitchers,
You got a new team.
But it’s not a new game.
And it’s not the same…
Is your career over?
You’ve gotten some four-leaf clover…
You feel it getting colder
When its late fall…
Do you still remember,
April through November,
You and Pettitte were members,
The best team in baseball…

A Yankees fan from Chicago, huh? Interesting.... I'm sitting in CT, friend - where we seem almost equally divided up as Yankees fans and (gah!) silly Red Sox fans. At times, it makes for many interesting (read that as "heated") conversations over lunch, at the bar, what have you.
As you may already know, Andy spent more time in the House that Ruth Built than Roger did... Roger having spent so much of his career with his back to "The Green Monster". And those silly Sox fans would undoubtedly argue that his best years were at Fenway. Still... his transition from Boston to NY (by way of Toronto) is the reason the Boston fans are less than willing to dance about in his honor and, I might add, the reason most Yankees fans never fully embraced him. Well - there's that and his record of choking when you need him most - not to mention his apparent unwillingness to be loyal to any one team. Then there's his rather crabby disposition and his unnecessary tantroms - but I'll leave that alone. Obviously, by now you've gathered that I would have rather seen Wells stick around... his flaws seem somehow more forgivable.
In case you think I'm being harsh - pop this url in your browser and have a look... (it is, for the record, a very rare example of my agreeing a Sox fan in matters of baseball):

Nonetheless, I tip my NY cap to you for offering up a baseball themed poem and for your obvious taste in teams!
With apologies for getting all fired up - but feeling that there are surely more worthy subjects for a Yankees fan to pay tribute to,
SNM |
