Complete Stranger

Topic: oops

You entrust me with a secret
I’ve only known you for three beers
Conversation flows quite easy
As you talk about past years
Stories of places you’ve been
Of highs, lows, love and rage
And how I wouldn’t understand
Cos your three times my age
So you nickname me young’un
And continue with your tale
Pausing briefly now and then
To smoke or drink your ale
You tell me of Vietnam
The things you saw, but didn’t crack
And how things all seemed so different
When you finally made it back
You said you used to beat your wife
And now you see that it was wrong
But she still left you anyway
Been alone now for so long
Talk about your kids you havnt seen
‘For about a year I ‘spose’
They’d be about your age, you say
And the careers that they chose
And how your proud of all of them
But they’re not proud of you
You say you want to see them soon
But they don’t want to see you
You change the subject, buy a round
And light another smoke
And tell me of this chap you knew
‘He was a real top bloke’
But then your story peters out
You look at your watch and wince
We’ll finish this some other time
But I haven’t seen him since
It’s strange, the people that you meet
While sitting down at the bar
The stories that they choose to share
Are the best of all by far
Seems because you are a stranger
They don’t feel like holding back
And maybe getting things off their chest
Helps to keep them on their track.

Very cool poem. I guess hearing all about him made me feel as though I was listening in to your excahnge (read: his confessions) The bar is the new church pew, I suppose. Thanks for your contribution. :)
