LIGHTHOUSES NEVER DIE

Contributed by lovingcritters on Sunday, 11th July 2004 @ 03:52:29 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

"LIGHTHOUSES NEVER DIE!"

Beacons of security......foundations of rock
Guidance for sailors, safe haven to dock!
Bright is their light........rescues so lovingly
Ask any seaman lost in the dark, then, can see!

Lighthouses never die--their lights slowly grow dim
Aged, out of style, discarded, future looks grimm.
In many places no longer needed.....lights appear blury
Replaced with man's scientific technology.

In any season, all kinds of weather.....
A steady beacon shines constantly.
Watchtowers of the sea, a brave anchor
Stand alone, never lonely, cast beacons bravely!

Strong, fortified, even when waves dash..........
Ever vigil, angry seas bombardments crash
Selfless, no thought of themselves
Lighthouses may be likened to ourselves!

Do they pray before going on their shift?
Interesting concept, if only they could speak.
Never depressed nor sad, what is their source, their gift?
Antiques, stand tall, strong not weak, rather sleek!

Signs of our times, inland alone, banished
Please, never let them be completely vanquished.
Deserving to stand, and be renovated to save.
Courageous careers of consistency with hearts brave!

Encouragement from companions like the Palm
Do they each have a soul? Friendship's balm?
And, when they turn their lights out for good?
Do they cry tears, with broken hearts,
like we would?

No light to shine forth........they stand in darkness
Abandoned, no occupants, aimless, ageless bleakness!
Ocean waves lash at their base to caress, or harm?
Alarming still, hoping they can resurrect their light and charm!

Do lighthouses die?
Of course not, as long as they can stand.
Just like man they retire.....folding each beacon hand
They slowly grow dim at the end of the day.
Lighthouses never die, memories remain.......
of their light and secure safeway!

The worlds first "stone" lighthouse was the Smeaton
Eddystone, built just south of Plymouth, England
in 1756 by John Seaton, the "Father of Civil Engineering."
It was lit with only 24 candles.

"Dimming Smiles!"

They are so strong and powerful, like this write. Connie, you have touched on one of my favorite things. My grandfather used to tell me to "be like a lighthouse beacon and shine your light for all to see." He loved them too. The many lives they saved I feel sure were forever grateful. Beautiful imagery here.
