Mortally wounded,
The youthful hunter
Crawls painfully
Past the cave mouth
Seeking refuge in
The dim interior
His fellows lay strewn
On the valley floor behind
Like so many smashed dolls,
Discarded
To-day, the Mammuth prevailed
Now the tribal belly
Will remain empty
For yet another day
No hunters will return
Bearing meat
No celebrations
Round the cooking fire
Faced with impending death
He scratches some ruuns
Upon the wall
As his life ebbs from him
Outside, there is gnashing
Of tooth against bone
As snarling predators fight
Over their food
One upon the other,
The ages pass
And the small cave
Lies undisturbed
Until the great flood
Sweeps through the valley
Carrying away the flotsom
Of bygone ages
Still the seasons
Continue to roll forward
Summer gives way to Fall
And Winter to Spring
The one behind the other
On and on they move
And the little cave
Lies undisturbed...
Until one day
A young student
Exploring the valley
Finds the cave entrance
Inside the cave
On the face of the wall
He sees the ancient ruuns
In a notebook, he copies
Them faithfully
After labouring many days
Over the ancient ruuns
He finally deciphers them,
"Kilroy, in the land
Of the Mammuth dwellers,
Was here."
