Thoughts on an Autumn Day

As I lye here on this dampened grass, moistened by the dew, I look anxiously at the baby blue sky that is hovering over the Earth as if it were looking down at us in shame. It’s white fluffy clouds overlapping it, almost looking like a drawing a three-year-old would have created.
I begin to wonder what peace really means. The world has not truly experienced the meaning. Yet, we say we are free, but are we? How can we say we are free if we insist on ridiculing our brothers as if they were our enemies just because they are a different color? Or because they wear different clothes, or they aren’t in “style.” We all are different in some way or another. Yet, I still lye here and wonder why we aren’t doing anything about it. We say we are all equal, but you cannot tell me we are. Sure, maybe we pretend to be, but that is just a false face. People kill others because they don’t like another person’s appearance. Should we let them get away with this? We just sit here like bumps and do nothing when we can teach our children right from wrong, and show others how to be, peaceful and respectful.
Ahh, the feel of autumn. The leaves blowing around me. And the breezes running over top of my body as runners jump hurdles. The sound of children playing tag-football in the neighbor’s yard, the little ones just watching in amazement. The expressions on their faces seem as if they think their big brothers and sisters are the greatest at everything they do. Not making a single mistake.
Then I think to myself, if we don’t tell our children that there is no such thing as being perfect, what are they going to think when they make a mistake. More so, we, the big brothers and sisters, tell them to go away when all they want to do is try to mimic us. We yell at them and still they don’t leave. Doesn’t that speak for itself? They learn from us, and we push them away, neglecting them. Why? I ask myself, “Why did I just tell my sister to stay away from me?” Yet, she still comes up to me and says she loves me. Something to think about.
Night is coming and the parents are calling their children in. It is now just us teenagers out. Some starting a game of tackle football; they didn’t want to hurt the little ones so they had previously played tag. Others are playing basketball or just walking; some are sitting. Most are talking to their friends. And here I am, lying on my back, gazing at the sky. I am just thinking about the world. What can I do to make the sky seem more alive? To help the world experience peace? I could start in my family. I could apologize to my little sister. I could start in my school. Instead of insulting my peers and family members, maybe I could try encouraging them, making peace with my foes. It’s worth an attempt. Then, one day, I can look up at the sky, and see a smile, and know I did what I could.
