A love that cannot be

The clock chimes for midnight
And my heart calls out for you.
But we cannot be together
Not today, tomorrow nor ever.
For one thing stands in our way.
Another's heart is at stake,
One for which we both do care.
And this heart must not be broken
For it will never repair.
I apologise, my love
For all the wrong I've caused
And we cannot be together because
Only more damage will be done.
But don't you ever forget
That I will always be near
If you need someone to talk to
Or one with which to shed a tear.
But don't cry for me now
I do not deserve it.
I must cry for you my dear
As you are the one who's hurting.
I'm sorry a thousand times
And I hope you that you can see
That I have to let you know now
That this love can never be.
