hey now

Hey now,
How long has it been
Since I was kicking my brother’s ankle
Under the table at dinner?
Sitting in almost miniature wooden chairs
Little tykes was but a blueprint
Asking for adult intervention cuz he keep
LOOKING AT ME
Thrown a cup of water on the hopscotch board
I just composed
Way before we supposed
skillet was a street invention
I lived as a prisoner of mama’s private menu
And I ate what she made
cuz it was always good food
And we had two baths at the passings of
Mister Sweltering Sun
U betcha, it was
Powder on the neck
Vaseline on the elbows and knees
Pink oil moisturizer in my hair
I had no idea
that it was privilege not to hafta
eat at McDonald’s
I was just jealous of everyone else’s happy meal toys
And I was employed full time to just
Pass it idly
And I went into Grandma’s Cedonia backyard every Sunday
Digging for china
Searching for mantises meditating
And hunting succulent honeysuckles
Nowhere to hide from to the sun
But did we want to?
I never knew then that life would
Run over and not even wait up for me
And stab me in the back
Knocking me down into the trashcan
Then
Hey now,
How long has it been
Since I played I declare war all the way to the end?

I got nice visuals from that childhood scenery. I wish I could get back all the time I spent on some things too...
