Sergeant Death

Topic:
war
|
Twelve hours of it
And no let up in sight
The Colonel says,
Stand fast! Be brave!
And don't give in
But when will it end?
Lord only knows!
My teeth are chattering
And my bladder leaks
I'm laying here
In my own puddle
Watching the odds shorten
As each exploding shell
Walks toward us up the beach,
Now they're screaming
Down on us!
And I can see
Into my mate's eyes
As each flash
Illuminates our small
Corner of the battle
Can we survive the night?
A lump of bile
Claws up,
And out of my gut
Constricting my throat
As Billy stares at me, petrified
Turned to stone, he is
I wonder, do I look like that
To him?
The waitin's what
Wears a man down
I'll take the fightin' any day
It's the waitin' that does you in
Sometimes I pray for a direct hit
Just so's I can be free of this
God-awful *****!
But if Sergeant Death
Comes calling for me,
Please Lord!
Let me be tucked, safe
In another foxhole
And don't tell the bugger
Where I am...

I love war poetry! ever since i read rupert brooked the soldier when i was about 13 (the first two poems i wrote for this site were war ones) anyway enough about me! this is an exceptional piece very well written and very powerful, made me feel like i was in the trench with you.

this poem really sparked a sad feeling for m e. it makes me think of the soldiers in Iraq and how I wonder what their fates well be. Great job though. |
