6/02-9/02
WHERE IN THE WORLD AM I
BACK BACK WAY BACK
WHEN I HAD NO YARD
IT MATTERED AND IT DIDN’T
BACK WHEN
I HAD THAT IMMEASUREABLE FORSIGHT
FOR SUCCESS AND ROADS NEVER TRAVELED
FOR DREAMS AND LOVE UNFULFILLED
INNOCENT AS THIS VIRGIN RAIN FOREST
AM I REALLY SITTING IN THIS PLACE
OR AM I SEEING WITH THAT IMAGINATION
THE ONE THAT TOOK ME
OUT OF THE CLEAR CUT IN THE MIDDLE
OF MY LUSH ONCE UNTOUCHED SKIN
I WAS SOFTER THAN A CLOUD
NOT BURNED BY THE SMOG AT SUNSET
SWEETER THAN MY GRANDFATHERS SMILE
I HAD ENDLESS DREAMS
LONGER THAN MY MOTHERS WORK DAY
IT WENT FARTHER THAN THE MILES I FLEW
TO BE HERE IN THIS PLACE WITH YOU
WHAT IN THE WORLD COULD I POSSIBLY DO
TO CONTRIBUTE TO A PERFECT PLACE WITHOUT TIME
WHAT CAN I GIVE TO YOU
IT WOULD BE A GIFT I WOULD MOST GRACIOUSLY GIVE
IN RETURN FOR THE CHANCE TO LIVE
IN THIS MOMENT TO BREATHE THIS AIR
TO BEND WITH THE TREES THAT ARE SWAYING
SWEATING INTO THE HUMIDITY
THAT’S COOLED BY THE CARRIBEAN BREEZE
MY MIND BEGS TO BE AT EASE
TO GIVE INTO THIS INTOXICATING WORLD
AND FORGET ABOUT EVERYTHING
SAVE FOR THE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN I FINALLY GET TO HOLD
BUT THE GLUE THAT HOLDS THIS DELICATE PLACE TOGETHER
IS COMING UNDONE
I CAN SMELL THE LIGHTER FLUID BURNING HIGH
ON THE COALS IN THE PIT
SO TELL ME HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR OZONE
MEDIUM ISN’T WELL I’D PREFER IT RAW
WE DON’T HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD TO GAMBLE
WE’RE PICKING FROM THE LAST STRAW
I REMEMBER THOSE HANDS THAT CAME
AND SOOTHED ME WHEN I WAS SICK
HER WATERS HAVE QUENCHED ALL OF OUR DROUGHTS
OUR DOUBTS AND OUR FEARS WITH A SIP
WHAT IN THE WORLD CAN I DO TO THANK HER
FOR THE TEARS SHED FOR JOY AND PAIN
WHEN ALL WE DO IS TORCH AND CUT HER TREES
EXCAVATE HER SOUL AND WONDER WHY THERE’S NO RAIN
TO SOAK UP IN THE EVER GROWING DUST BOWLS
THIS EARTH YOUR EARTH MY EARTH OUR EARTH
SHE’S DROWNING IN THE BATH OF OUR TRASH
OUR SEWAGE AND OUR CONVIENIENCE
SHE’S BEING STRANGLED BY THE DISCOUNTS AND
THE EXTRA PLASTIC BAGS AT THE CHECK OUT COUNTER
DIDN’T YOU HEAR THE DAMN THING BEEPING
REMINDING US THAT WE’RE RUNNING
OUT OF TIME AND CLEAN SPACE
RUNNING INTO LINES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO DESTRUCTION
WHILE WE PAY THE HUMBLE PRICE
FOR ALL THAT’S FAST AND A WASTE
INSTEAD OF SPENDING OUR EXPENSIVE TIME
ON THINGS THAT LAST DISCERNING WITH GREEN TASTE
WE CAN DROP C NOTES INTO BIG BAD ASS TRUCKS BY THE TON
BUT WE HAVE NO CLEAN WATER WELLS IN CALIFORNIA
TO DRINK FROM
THEY’RE ALL LOADED UP WITH MTBE
FOR OUR CLEANER BURNING BUCK
DRANO FOR A CLOG
SO THAT WE CAN PASS OUR SMOG
AND FAIL THE REST OF THE TEST
IT’S GETTING SO THICK I CAN HARDLY BREATHE
BUT I CAN DRIVE THROUGH IT LIKE THE REST
JUST ROLL UP THE WINDOW AND CRANK UP THE AC
THE POLLUTION IS THICK AND THIN
LACED IN THE GROUND ATMOSPHERE AND OUR SKIN
LIKE COCAINE LIKE AN AWFUL STAIN
LIKE A DRUG THAT WE CAN’T KICK
IT DOESN’T MAKE IT ANY EASIER THAT OUR POLITICIANS
ARE SUCKING ON BIG MONEY’S DICK
I SEE IT NOW THAT I’M NOT IN KANSAS
IS IT SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
BUT THOSE THAT AFFORD THE BEST
ARE NEVER THE ONE’S TO PAY
THE BURDEN IS RESTING ON THE BACKS OF THOSE
THAT LIVE AND WORK IN THE REAL WORLD DAY TO DAY
HERE’S WHAT I HAVE TO SAY TO ALL OF THOSE BIGWIGS
THAT HAVE US BURNING OIL LIKE CASH IN THEIR POCKET
THAT CUT DOWN OUR TEES LIKE THEY DO THE COMMON MAN
THEY SIT IN MEETINGS CONDEMNING TREE HUGGERS
ANDCAN’T POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND
WHY WE’D WANT TO CONSERVE A COMMODITY WHY WE’D TAKE A STAND
WHY WE’D WANT TO SAVE A FOREST FROM BEING GRASSLAND
TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE
THAT CAN’T BRING THEMSELVES TO RECYCLE OR BE BOTHERED TO SIFT
THROUGH THEIR OWN FILTHY TRASH
TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE WATCHING SPECIES DISSAPEAR ON
ANIMAL PLANET AND DISCOVERY
IT MAKES THEM SAD AND SAY “OH THAT’S TOO BAD”
UNTIL THEY CAN CHANGE THE CHANNEL ON THE TV
TO ALL OF THE KIDS OUT THERE
THAT HAVE BEEN SPARED THE TRUTH
UNTIL THEY CAN’T LEARN TO SEE
SO THEY CAN BE GOOD LITTLE CONSUMERS
LIKE THEY LEARNED FROM THE BOOMERS
SO THEY CAN PAY FOR THEIR PARENTS RETIREMENT
WITH THEIR LIVES AND THEIR FUTURE
TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES AND WALK BAREFOOT ON THE LAND
DON’T BE AFRAID TO HEAR WITH YOUR SKIN
THE STORIES THAT HAVE BEEN ON GAG
SHRUGGED AWAY FROM LIKE SIN
YOU’RE NEVER AS BIG OR AS BOLD
AS WHEN YOU’RE LIVING FOR SOMETHING
GREATER THAN YOURSELF
YOU’LL NEVER FEEL HAPPINESS
LIKE KNOWING THAT YOUR WORLD
IS A BETTER PLACE BECAUSE OF THE ACTIONS YOU TAKE
EVERYDAY IS AN OPPORTUNITY
TO CORRECT A COUPLE OF WRONGS
SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS WALKING TO THE STORE
THAT’S FOUR BLOCKS AWAY
TO ELIMINATE A LITTLE SMOG
AND KEEP THE BLUE FROM TURNING GRAY
YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
THE GUILT IS ALWAYS THERE TRYING TO REMIND YOU
DON’T GIVE IT THE CHANCE
JUST SO YOU CAN DO YOUR LITTLE SONG AND DANCE
WHILE THE SHOWER IS RUNNING FOR KARAOKES SAKE
GIVE TO THE FUTURE TO YOUR KIDS AND OTHER LIVES
MAKE SURE THERE’S SOME BEAUTY LEFT
IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD
NOT JUST IN SOME BOOK YOU READ
TO YOUR BOYS AND GIRLS
BEFORE YOU TURN OUT THE LIGHTS
SAY GOOD NIGHT
AND SINK INTO THIS DREAM
ONE WORLD WITH A PEOPLE LIVING TO
KEEP IT ALIVE FOURISHING AND CLEAN

Welcome to ypdc, Bernje.. and I hope you enjoyed your stay in Costa Rica. As a fellow Caribbean..(I'm from Trinidad and Tobago) I enjoy hearing what foreigners have to say about our Caribbean Islands..
This was interesting, altho I was a bit confused at certain times...but it could just be my 'short' attention span!!

Thanks for taking the time to read my short novel of a poem. I think a little backround on it would help you understand where I was coming from. My girldfriend was in Costa Rica for 3 months. She's an ecology major and the trip had a lot to do with conservation. I'd always belived it was necessary to conserve what little natural rescources are left. But when I got out there and actually hiked through the rainforest, saw monkeys and crabs and scarlet maccaws out of cages living the way nature intended, it made my heart sink to think of all that had already vanished. And that we all can do a little something to contribute to the cause of helping this planet live beyond the selfishness of this culture and this generation. Hope it helps shed some light on where I was coming from.
