Vacationland

Topic: Holiday Poetry

___________________

The hottest day of the summer or so it seems
Perfect for celebrating, cookouts and parades
An afternoon at the beach, crowded with tourists
All the pretty girls in bikinis and the boys watching them
Mothers chase after toddlers near the water’s edge
While we doze in out lounge chairs turning brown
Working up a sweat before we take a swim
This hallmark holiday ushers in tourist season
Officially, they are counted crossing the border into Maine
SUV’s loaded with summer toys and towing boats
Minivans, and old sedans can’t wait to get to Vacationland
The seaside resorts are bumper to bumper with out of state plates
Up at the lake, our little village has grown three fold
From now until Labor Day they will stay and play
Jetskis, tubing, kayaks, and mountain bikes
On rainy days they head into the village
Where eager shopkeepers greet them
Maine t-shirts, hats and sweatshirts
Reminders of Vacationland to adorn
Flatlanders as we like to call them, affectionately of course.

You are too kind. My grandfather called them "pigs." When I was in high school, "M*****" was the common term. I like this. I can picture it. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.
