I have a friend who's a Baptist minister who always tells me "don't kill the dragon." She tells me this every time I say my life is a mess. (often) Apparently there is a dragon of chaos (I forget her name) in some other culture whose arrival signifies great changes taking place in one's life. She says that we Westerners are so programmed to slay all our dragons that we often miss the changes that are supposed to be taking place in us spiritually because we can't stand the chaos. Now I am preaching to myself here because I can't stand it either. But I heard her words in my head the minute I read that line in your poem. Anyway -- here's to all of us shuddering beneath the dragon's breath. |
