Where Imagination is Rooted

I climb and I climb the branches
And it matters not to me,
Eucalyptus, Oak or Fir
Any kind of tree.
But the trees are everywhere
The decision seems so hard.
Today I think I’ll choose a pine,
A giant in my back yard.
Climbing, climbing, climbing,
As the pitch sticks to each hand
I am high up in the tree
And I am in command.
I’m the captain of a space ship
Or the pilot of a plane.
I’m a fire-breathing dragon
Or a bird in a hurricane.
I look out to the horizon
From the branch on which I stand,
At the other trees and mountains
And the color changing land.
Unicorns eat the daffodils,
Mermaids swim deep in the sea
Jackalopes are hopping
Through the forest peacefully.
Now the wind is chilly
As the sun begins to set
And I’m upon the balcony
With glowing Juliet.
She speaks to me through the night
And says “It’s time to play again,
It’s time for you to look out west
Be on your guard for little men.”
But where are they, I just don’t know
As I climb even higher.
There they are, I see them
Dwarves with axes and with fire.
Here they come to claim my tree
But I won’t let them take her.
I will fight with all my might
And I promise I will save her.
I put on all my armor and
I pick up my sword
Raising it into the sky
I whisper: Help me Lord.
“Son it’s time for supper,”
I hear my mother say.
I hug my tree and I climb down
“I’ll be back another day!”

You're poem is so cute!
I used to climb the tree in my front yard, surely, i didn't have as active imagination as the little boy, but it was another world. |

What a wonderful, nostalgic piece. Delivered, perfectly, from the boy's viewpoint. Personally, I think we all could do with a bit more tree climbing and dreaming!
Welcome to YPDC! I do hope you stick around and share some more of your work... I enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading more of your work,
