We All Fall Down

vested in darkest night
moonlight rises to my left
across my fingertips regret
drips like sorrow
bittersweet
without apology
step closer
suggesting we could be
more and more
dare we live the dream
grab the brass ring
or sit quietly by
heads bowed in prayer
when god has forsaken us
to chase better things
with brighter futures
across the millenniums
we are bereft of love
yet passion churns
relentless in our breasts
asking too much of us
but never enough
to ease the ache
desire leaves holes
our bleak hearts
bleeding constantly
a trail of love spent
in youth and ignorance
emptied now we wait
with papery dreams of greatness
to keep us company at night
