The Virgin banner bright of Guadalupe
was used with force opposing Spanish reign.
Now leading riots, insurrection group.
Their righteous banner seen without a stain,
did rally people shouting cry's refrain.
With jolting impact they attacked the forts,
and great initial victories they did gain.
All heavy blows assaulted Spanish courts.
Plotting rebellion with a group of other dissident "criollos", including
former "corregidor" Miguel Dominguez, and royal army officers,
Ignacio Allende and Juan Aldama, their plan was to gather an army, seize
important towns, expel peninsular Spaniards confiscating their property.
Initially their revolutionary government was to operate in the name of
Ferdinand VII, but at an opportune time declare independence.
Father Hidalgo was selected to head the movement, Allende, military
commander. General dissatisfaction with the Spanish rule throughout
Mexico had strengthened their position. The Intelligentsia challenged
autocratic, unreasonable, and incompetent government; laborers groaned
under the lash and harsh taxes; "criollos", people born in Mexico of
Spanish parents, hated their second-class status imposed by the "gachupines",
those born in Spain. Rebellion was in their hearts and minds. It wasn't
difficult for Hidalgo to find a way to unite them. Taking a Virgin of Guadalupe banner, making it a military standard, he astutely
changed civil rebellion into a religious crusade. Image of the dark-skinned
Virgin was a powerful symbol attracting and holding the Indian and
"mestizo" support. Hidalgo's impassioned words were:
"Viva la Independencia! Viva Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe! (Long live
Independence! Long Live our Lady of Guadalupe!)
