Evening Shadows

Contributed by OysterMoon on Tuesday, 22nd October 2002 @ 08:30:00 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

I look over at his slackened jaw and thankfully
hear a gentle rhythm to his breathing, sweat
glistening on his brow from a journey he
alone must take, faraway, even though he
has never left his bed.

I sit in my own solitude in a partially darkened
room, trying to smile, so much time to
reminisce when our laughter and our passions
filled us both to saturation.

Back then never thinking when our winding
roads of abandonment would bring us to
this moment, stopping us in our tracks
catching us between the gnarly jaws of life
and death.

The nurse emerges, slicing through my morose,
as she interrupts his
voyage, apologizing and at the same
time becoming the villain in her
quest of saving lives.

He sleeps once more, grimacing, trying to
find the niche his bed has to offer, as I wish
I could own his pain for once, while I pray
his shoulders can continue to
bear the weight of getting
old.
