First Flight
Remember
what our ten-year-old
love
felt like
that heat-laden afternoon
when we held hands
a first time
and stopped along the pond
to watch a red-wing
in the rushes
observing us
from its reedy perch
swaying,
as if prying
that tender moment
into our deep hearts
for a lifetime--
or was it only in mine?

Left me sad that you even had to wonder. Left my heart rather aching for an answer to your question. Maybe that was the answer.
Smiles,
