The Lunch Box

Contributed by cookie1 on Saturday, 26th June 2004 @ 12:41:35 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

A Little girl, walking to school
Carrying a lunch box she thought was so cool.
Teachers, boys, recess, and math
Happy times, but they were not meant to last,
Dreams and adventure is what lie ahead,
So this little girl left not looking back.
Some dreams came true, life hasn’t been bad,
Although many of the adventures turned out to be quite sad,
Where did this little girl go?
I miss her smile and long to hear her laugh,
and the carefree way that she used to dance.
The lunch box now old rusty and worn,
Is sitting on the shelf looking forlorn,
The same hands that carried it off to school
Are now dusting it and remembering when it was so very cool.

This is so distant from my normal tastes, yet I can't help but like it. I love the image of the little girl growing up, remembering that all of those "good times" really weren't so great--and those last two lines are quite sad. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed this one.
