She knew she had called out unintentionally.
He had left her, and now fireflies
self-sacrificed en masse each morning
before her mirror, flickering death
dances, leaving the darkness. Only
half their weight made light.
Once, he had told her this not quite love
story. Yes love, but the kind one might feel
toward - let’s say broccoli. A voracious
green, cruciferous love. He said in the land
of fireflies a female learns to mimic mating
signals of another species, attracting
unsuspecting horny males,
who she then devours.
This seems unfair at first.
What he did not tell her was
the motive. You see, he has
what she needs. He bleeds
for her survival. When he is gone
she wears his scent like a talisman.
For a while she will try to rescue them
from all the small openings. They are dying
to find a way into her. They swim in coffee
cups, the sink. They rest each night on her
toothbrush. The female firefly knows
only two words. They are the same
invocation. All matters are of hunger.
Be careful who you kiss, she says
in which language you speak the mystery
of touch. We are all predator. We are all
prey. Eventually we all make small meals
of our gods. It is the only prayer we know.

I love the male- female dynamic mixed with imagination, myth and religion in your pieces.
Good writing. |

And the mothers and wives and wives to be, would hand a shield to the male, come home in victory......or be carried home dead upon this shield.
and the male obediently feared the wrath and was carried home....dead upon that shield.
Another spell binding and humorus write. |
