In ordinary ways
I've missed you.
A lamp stands on the table
With a burned out bulb,
And I wonder where
The light has gone.
In ordinary ways
I've longed to hold you.
Across the alley
In the neighbor's yard
A child's swing
Sways empty in the wind.
In ordinary ways
I've needed you.
I set a place for dinner
And find comfort in the simplicity
Of a square of Jell-O
On a plate.
In ordinary ways
I've loved you.
The cat rests warm
Under the ivy in the window
As her leaves reach gently upward
To receive the morning sun.
