Confines of cabin gave good comfort ease.
Continuing further coze men stayed awhile.
Then walking main deck they found stronger breeze.
"That Mister Huerra was an act of passion. Whaler who took Captain Luego's
life for raping his native wife, was drunk and out of his mind at the time.
Anyone in his position might have done the same thing. Don't get me wrong,
Mister Huerra, I don't condone murder, but at least it's understandable.
Captain Luego was a fine seaman, a capable captain. His assailant should be
punished. "Where were you when your captain was killed?"
Don Hernandez became somewhat annoyed with all this questioning.
Don Huerra seemed to be searching for something blameworthy of his new
captain. He spoke in Captain Thompson's defense. "He was with
Captain Luego when this crazy man, Jack Phelps, entered the saloon.
Captain Thompson tried to stop the fight but was cut on the shoulder, unable
to prevent the knife from going between Captain Luego's ribs. All this
is in the deposition he gave captain Leland Bergstrom of the Brig Sentinel,
Don Huerra. Man was put in chains and taken back to some place in the
United States called Nantucket, I think. Is that right, captain?"
"Yes sir. He'll stand trial in an American court of law on the east coast."
Huerra let the matter rest. He took a swallow of whiskey, smiling.
"Captain Thompson is a brave man, Excellency. You've made a good
choice in your selection of him for your new captain of the La Paloma."
Having said this, Huerra felt secretly dissatisfied with
Don Hernandez' decision.
