The Landlord

Contributed by krisseee on Friday, 18th June 2004 @ 09:42:23 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

i can give you a discount on rent
to account for the bright red stains
and also the hole in the wall
that means you´ll get when it rains
you see the person who lived here previously
took a gun and blew out his brains
and all of these little mementos
are the only thing that remains

I used to have rental properties, and we'd never do anything like that.

We'd've patched the hole in the wall, scrubbed the place from top to
bottom, repainted, have the carpets cleaned, and cleaned all the
windows so the sun could shine in unobstructed.

The wife would have made a nice set of theme curtains for the windows,
(absolutely no flags to be hung on windows in any of our properties)
and we would have made any other necessary repairs before renting it
out again.

Then we'd calculate our costs and check the current market price for
similar rental units, and then set a fair monthly rental fee for the unit.

That landlord sounds like he's content to sit by and lose his property
to neglect.

Unfortunately, the landlording business is full of people like that.

Loved your poem, by the way, and like the rental unit, it could use some
minor repair and a bit of refurbishing, but it's basically a sound piece
of work.
