What Do You Know?

Contributed by Little_Miss_Magic on Wednesday, 16th October 2002 @ 08:30:00 PM in AEST
Topic: Suicide

Do you know me?
Look at me… just look at me.
I’ve never been diagnosed, or analyzed, or seen by a specialist.
But I could tell you better than any one of them what’s wrong with me.
Watch me as I take this breath.

Did you catch that?
Look closely.

I didn’t appreciate that breath at all.
I don’t appreciate any of them, anymore.
And what was this poem even about?
I can’t remember!
I was concentrating so hard
on forcing myself to breathe for you,
even though I didn’t want to, I made myself breathe for you!
And now I can’t remember what this poem is about.
That’s the way it always happens,
and that’s why I get so angry!
That’s why I hate what I see in the mirror,
an abomination, as grotesque and unlovable
as any Opera Ghost!
And that’s why I sit in silence,
while the world goes on bubbling around my corner of personal space.
It’s because they don’t care,
and because there’s too much to say
with too little time and no one to listen.
It’s because even if I could say something right now
that would touch your heart or change your life
or inspire you to be great or anything else that you are hoping I’ll do,
in a few minutes you’ll walk out of this room and begin to forget me.
It may take an hour, it may take a week, it may even take a year,
but it will happen,
and sooner or later I won’t matter to you, or to anyone else!
And neither will you.

So what do you know about life?
What exactly have you done that makes that breath you just took worth taking?

I hope, for your sake, that you have an answer.
Because I don’t.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
