And Captain Thompson told of island's port
that whalers use where fair winds often blow,
but seamen practice more disgraceful sport.
"Thank you, sir. It'll come in real handy around the Horn."
"Tell me, captain," Huerra asked. "What are hides selling for now in Boston?"
"Mister Huerra, last I heard hides were twelve and one half cents a pound."
"With such a figure in mind," Don Hernandez continued, "La Paloma's
cargo exceeds one hundred thousand dollars in value. If captain gets the cargo to
Boston safely, he'll have one percent commission."
Don Huerra was impressed. "What does a young captain do with so much money,
if he's not married?" "Mister Huerra, I try awfully hard to save it. It's
not always possible, but I try. Someday, when I'm married, I'll buy land and do
something with it. I don't know the first thing about ranching or farming, but
maybe I can learn. It's my thinking you've got a good life."
Don Hernandez didn't like talk of leaving the sea. To his mind once a man entered
something, he stayed with it all his life. "Captain, life doesn't suit you?" he asked.
"It's the best life this side of heaven, sir. I wouldn't change it for all the tea
in China or hides in California as far as that goes. But time comes when a
man wants to set some roots. He wants a family and the sea keeps him away from
home too long. Don't think I don't appreciate my promotion, sir. I surely do. It's
one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I guess what I'm talking about is something that won't happen for years."
