Oh No I Am

Topic: FamilyPoems

One evening relaxing and watching TV.,
My little boy ran up to me.
He knew it was time to go to bed,
And “no night night” is what he said.
I smiled at him as I looked his way,
And told him it was Ok to play.

He ran off as fast as he could go,
With his teddy bear and blanky in tow.
He played in the kitchen with all his heart,
For a two-year-old he seemed so smart.
His mother walked in and I heard him say,
“my Daddy said that me could play.”
She said “you’re going to bed young man,”
And he replied “Oh no I am.”

After we laughed and he played a while,
He was off to bed, I had to smile.
He thought his answer was all well and good,
Though it made no sense we understood.
It made me think of things he has said,
But what really goes on in his little head?

What does he think as he hugs me real tight,
And how does he feel when we kiss him goodnight.
Little tears in his eyes starting at birth,
But just how bad can a child hurt.
When I think of his matter-of-fact reply,
I look ahead with a comforting sigh.
Will I be a good Dad to my little man?
I think to myself, “Oh No I am.”

Oh! This is incredibly sweet! I was touched by the "wonderings" toward the end of the poem... I'll say just this -- from where I sit, I think if you're stopping to wonder how your child feels and what's going on inside him... well... you're at least 90% there in terms of being a good dad. That is, I think, the biggest part of it. Nicely done!
