The World Grows Loud

Contributed by TheSpiritx on Wednesday, 9th June 2004 @ 01:43:35 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

The rain
Drip
Drip
Dripping

Outside.

Falls to the ground..
Pound..

And the noise of it all
is silence.

The band's playing,
Strumming their guitars
Beating their drums
And singing with a voice so full of emotion.

And the sound of it all
is silence.

A car engine starts across the street,
and I look out my open window at the man,
old, grey, weary from work,
Complaining to himself behind rolled-up windows.

And the revving of the car:
nonexistent.

I stroll down the sidewalk,
Humming to myself a merry tune.
People smile, I smile, and walk on. I walk on.
The colors in the crowd overwhelming.

And the song I want to hear
is silent.

Murmur of the crowd,
A little here, a little there,
Like pepper on a meal.
Sentences barely tasted with each bite.

But the whole spoken concept...
is silent.

And, with my friends,
Waving hands and flying fingers,
The voices, not vocal but visual,
Become both alive and understandable.

And the world...
Grows loud.

Nice contrast at the end. The noise out there can sometimes be overwhelming,.

I can't believe I haven't read you previously. My! what I was missing!

I love this. It is both gentle and powerful at the same time. I do not know concretely if is the topic or the style... but something here gives the reader the sense of heightened feeling. At times I've wondered if we're all missing a lot per the distraction of all that is going on around us --- this only confirms my thinking... this so clearly demonstrates that there is so very much more.

Well, well done! I enjoyed this a lot -

I think this is a universally relateable poem - and I am not certain that most readers know, or need to know that you are deaf to feel the truth in it -

I was struck by the permeating silence - the way it lives in your words - and the sudden brightly colored life that exploded when you are among friends -

Wonderful words -
