Shhhh ! Friends and fellows, bad tidings to you I bring
They say the greeting card factory is now onto our thing
They’ll eat us up and water us down and drag us down their way
And no-one will be left to tell our truth at the greeting card factory.
And watch out for traitors in our midst, I know I heard one say
Greeting cards aren’t so bad; they’re an honest living today.
But they’ll have us punching in and punching out, or worse
They’ll be punching holes in us: they’ll be punching holes in verse.
So, lines, hemistiches and verses of the world, unite!
Together, till the final stanza, we’ll fight the good fight
And don’t forget metaphor, onomatopoeia, rhyme and simile
They’re our avant-garde, our rearguard - the entire infantry.
O listen, fairest friends: sonnets, sestets, free verse, odes
They have poetry software, with roll-out menus and rhyming modes
If we don’t act now, we’re doomed our own mournful dirge to sing
The future of poetry hangs on us. Those are the tidings I bring.
