Before I took your life,
Back home you had a wife.
I see you are a man like me.
Some what refined,
Your mother waits for you return like mine.
We share a common fear of death.
We go through strain& have the same dying pain.
Forgive me comrade, why did they choose you as my enemy?
If we didn’t parade in these uniforms we could be friends.
What will happen when she receives your letters no more?
Will she wonder where is her boy?
If I could take it all back,
I wouldn’t attack.
Killing you has also killed me,
If only my mother could see what I turned out to be.
Battle brings out the worst in hate,
Forgive me comrade for regret comes too late.
I wish I could tell your wife,
Why I had to take your life.
This action will always come back & stand before me.
Your agony pierces my ears like a shot to my chest,
So as you lay there to finally rest,
I just want you to know that today it was you,
Tomorrow it might be me.
We can’t fight against this it has beat us both.
It’s not a game,
I didn’t sign up for glory or fame.
My pride lies on the floor,
Not exactly sure what I'm fighting for?
The pictures you stored in you helmet made me smile,
They made me think of my own family for a while.
I stare blankly at your 23 year old face,
And think how life is ironic and brought us both to this place.
You look into my eyes with tears,
It’s like you can read where I’ve been all these years.
I don’t know if you can see,
That you’re not that different from me.
We aren’t trained to have feelings for guys like you,
But what can I do when this all becomes too true.
I never thought I’d understand,
What it was like to kill a man.
I never knew it would be this tough,
That the haunting memories would be so rough.
To the woman who gave birth,
& brought you to this earth,
I know will worry,
And for that I'm truly sorry.
But at that moment I didn’t see a man
I saw the enemy with a grenade in his hand.
Comrade I just hope you understand.
Comrade I just hope she understands.

This is really good. Just wish it had been written by a former soldier...
