The Race of Man

Contributed by Elena on Monday, 7th June 2004 @ 03:22:36 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

In the "Book of Things disguised for Children"
Is the page describing
The Race of Man as a species:
Upright, walking with noble stance
A mindful communicator,
The author of the social edifice.

But when childhood yields the firstfruits of manhood
“Uglies for Adults Only”
Is the guidebook handed over,
Whose first lesson is that
Race is not species but a competition
Separating faster from slower and –est,
Bigger from smaller and –est, whiter from darker
and –est
And so on (the race goes on).

For some (not for all)
It is “Women and children last!.”
The lesser of the species? The losers of the race?
No, abiders by the initial rules, and clingers to
The upright author of the social edifice.

I found myself pondering this one over . . .
Social edifice? These are very interesting perspectives. I like the way you demarcated the difference between species and race.
Very intriguing and well written.
Thanks for sharing.

Very good. Although I think there is much more to it than that. Read my poem: With good purpose.
