Being under the Bed and Not In It

Here I lie on the underside of love - in good company:
Billy Goat’s Gruff, Dracula and Frakenstein by my side.
Monsters we,
Condemned to pine at night
And hide from love
Under the bed and not in it.
Together we deploy new strategies
And argue over who will be the first to leave
Our stately retreat
Our hideaway from love.
I say: “Dracula, for
The best defence is a good offence
And he is the best endowed.”
But he answers, “I can’t even look at myself in a mirror,
You want someone to look into my eyes?
(Which are bloodshot
In the light of day, I might add).
As for me, I’d send out Frakenstein to love.
He has a real heart for it.”
But the floor trembles as the great monster
Rolls over closer to the wall,
Further into the dark.
He gave his heart once, he said
And it was never given back.
“Billy’s a wiser choice
His fur will keep him warm; his coat will keep him from harm.”
“My hoofs”, says Billy, “are not adorned
To travel the road of love
Upon which two legs are better than four.
I’d say, you go out
You’ve spent so much time here.
Under the bed and not in it.
And his comrades at arms agreed.
So I am pushed out from under
A daughter of the regiment deserted by the army
Bravely approaching the battlefield of love
A bit of each I bring:
Bloodshot eyes, an aching heart
And a coat to keep someone warm.
A coat to keep someone from harm.
