Minding the Gap

There is always an abyss
between where you’ve been
and the fast moving train
that is the rest of your life,
the one that never quite fit.
You may mind it, but it will be
there, gaping up at you no matter
what you say, or how carefully
you step. That stiletto heel
in its mouth won’t even
bring a wince. And the token
you clutch for all you’re worth
is drawn to places like this
becomes slippery and strains
with its own weird magnetism
toward the hole that has opened
in front of you. With or without
faith, you will still leap
onto this catalyst. Only then
will you be able to breathe.
