The Forgiving

Topic: StoryPoetry

“Tell me what you saw,” I asked, “there deep within your dreams?”
I waited there a moment till she silenced all her screams.
“Were they sights of hell,” I asked, “or visions or the gates?”
She looked at me, and staggered back like I’m the one she hates.

“You are what I saw,” she said. “Your eyes, I know them well.”
I smiled at her, and waited for the story she would tell.
“I was in your dream?” I asked. “Now tell me, are you sure?”
She backed away so pale just like disease without a cure.

“Yes, you are the one!” she screamed. “Why do you haunt me still?”
I took a step toward her as a challenge to her will.
“What is it you mean?” I mocked. “What causes have I to haunt?”
And in her eyes I saw a flash of things she’d known to want.

“You will take no more,” she begged, “you have no right to me.”
I looked at her with smiling lips, and showed her all of me.
“Oh, you are a beast!” she screamed, “An animal of hate.”
I raised my hand, and pointed out the hour getting late.

“You will come with me,” I said, “you’ve paid your fare in full.”
She looked around with wild eyes, but found no strings to pull.
“Why is it for me,” she asked, “you’ve come with such a look?”
I caught her head, and held it there, my eyes just like a hook.

“You have bid me come,” I said, “with all your wanton deeds.”
I saw her realize that I’m the product of her greed.
“I have done no wrong,” she lied. “I do but what is fare.”
She looked at me, and searched my eyes, but found I did not care.

“This is so unjust,” she screamed, “There’s far more worse than me!”
I stepped again toward her soul, soon taking it for me.
“You are who it is,” I said, “that I have come to take.”
I saw the shadows of herself fall broken all were fake.

“I don’t understand,” she cried. “So tell me, what’s my crime?”
I sighed aloud, and thought to tell the reasons for my rhyme.
“Long ago you lost,” I said, “compassion from your soul.”
And as my words took hold of her she knew my final goal.

“Then you lost your faith,” I said, “sold cheaply for your lust.”
And like an acid bath I found her armor start to rust.
“Then your final sins,” I said, “your needfulness and greed.”
She dropped her arms and looked at me, expressions hard to read.

“All you’ve said is true,” she sobbed, “I’ve long forgot my name.”
I waited just a moment more till certain ‘twas no game.
“Is there nothing left?” she begged. “Is this how it must end?”
I smiled at her, and touched her lips, and to her ear did bend.

“You have one more chance,” I said, “don’t waste it on a lie.”
My words hit home, and brought her back, and she began to cry.
“You will not regret,” she laughed, “I’ve learned my lesson well.”
I watched her as she left my realm; another saved who fell.
