Talking to Strangers in Trains

Some of the finest pieces of humanity
Almost remained anonymous to me.
Had it not appeared a worthier stake
A pregnant silence for me to break.
Words chosen as keys to unlock doors,
Protecting the promise of amenity in store.
Bad coffee, an opener set aside
Provides at least a calmer ride.
The old world order in a word torn down,
Unwanted tyrants ousted and set to run.
The world, an oyster in our hands,
Yielding perfect freedom in distant lands.
The door opens onto family and friends
A conversation likely never to end
Spines curved in anatomical concession
Harbour to “for strangers only” confessions.
Eyes on an expedition over another’s face
For minutes or hours, children of grace.
But one child gets off ; the other one stays
And opens a book to an unread page.

Very good poem I have often had conversations with people I don't know on the train. You put it to words very well. Thanks |

I love traveling on the train and meeting people - seems everyone has a stroy to tell -
Your poem captures that scenario perfectly
