False Memories

Topic: MiscPoems

She says goodbye to her best friend
Hears “later, girl!” on the other end.
Hangs up the phone and lets out a sigh
She’s getting tired of living this lie.

Justin Timberlake’s on her wall
But somehow he doesn’t help at all.
Brad Pitt used to make her smile
But she hasn’t done that in a while.

There’s pictures taped up on her mirror
Were they really taken just this year?
She tries and tries time and again
But she can’t replicate that plastic grin.

Sometimes she wants to tear them down
Rip the posters to the ground.
Destroy everything she loved before
None of that matters anymore.

But she’s always held back by her fear
It tells her, hide away your tears
Don’t take off your protective skin
Or people will see you deep within.

They won’t understand so don’t try to explain
You’ll only cause them confusion and pain.
You’re not the person they used to know
But save them the heartbreak and put on a show.
