Graveyards of the world

Contributed by mdmorash on Monday, 31st May 2004 @ 09:24:52 PM in AEST
Topic: oops

“Do you see the world?” He spoke. “It’s crumbling to me.”
The cracking of the surface there was more than plane to see.
“Isn’t it sublime?” He cooed. “A vision left undone.”
He held the rock within his grasp, caressing it for fun.

“What is it you see?” He asked. “Within the darkened day.”
I tried to think, but felt myself now falling far away.
“This is just the end,” he said, “but nothing’s finished yet.”
I tried to hold the words he’d spoke for fear I’d soon forget.

“Will you take this trip,” he smiled, “and see the worlds I’ve seen?”
I saw in him a spark, and thought of all the things he’d been.
“Will you show me true?” I asked. “Or will you hide the real?”
He looked at me, and gave a smile while now began to peal.

As I watched the sky I saw that all I knew was not.
It came to me that I knew less than this man had forgot.
Something in his way had shown that I would grow by dawn.
Hoping against helpless fate I would not become his pawn.

Then I followed him away, into the world of dreams.
But all the things I saw within were silent as their screams.
As we walked the miles he talk, and told me of the past.
And as his voice became a song it sealed me in its cast.

“This is where I rule,” he said, “my kingdom is dismay.”
I wondered at the visions that my mind had to display.
”I don’t understand,” I said, “your riddles are too hard.”
He turned to me with deck in hand, and drew the final card.

There I saw the bones of death all warn, but still in tacked.
And in his wicked grin I found his words had just been backed.
”You are on that card,” I said, “your name is none but death.”
The look I brought him by my words stole ev’ry shallow breath.

“You have seen me true,” he said, “I am the end of all.”
But in his words I found he did not answer evils call.
”There’s no need to fear,” he said, “I mearly keep the gate.”
I’m not the devil or the beast, I do not rule by hate.

“Tell me this one thing,” I said. “Their bidding you don’t do?”
He looked at me, and smiled again. I know he’d tell me true.
”I serve none but death,” he said, “no side I will now choose.”
I thought about his balanced world, and saw so much to lose.

“Is there anything,” I asked, “that I can do for you?”
He thought on this for quite a time and then he took me through.
”This is where the lost,” he said, “all wander till they pass.”
I looked around that lonely place and heard their silent mass.

“This is what I need,” he said, “someone to show their way.”
I knew my time had long since gone so I told him I would stay.
”Show them to the light.” he said, “Their past will be unfurled.”
I took my post within the halls of the graveyards of the world.
