Deep vibrations rise from the ground,
Every particle of the earth mesmerised,
Electrified by the voice of a legend.
Dark notes softened by a white handkerchief
In synchrony with violins and drums.
Passion set aflame in sleeping hearts
Aching, burning to the core.
Layâli – luxuriant, long, lovely nights
Slow and natural, as the Nile
Bringing evening to the shore.
Her voice, the underbelly of the air
As 1001 Arabian and otherwise nights
Still dance in the light of her moon.
