I remember being there...
Always hearing people fight,
Always hearing gun shots
And the children crying.
I remember the screams
Of one in particular,
"Daddy, don't whip me again,
I never did anything!
It's not me that killed Cory!"
I remember always seeing cops in the building
I even got to know a few of them
Just because they were there every week.
I remember always seeing
Blood stains on the carpet,
Our apartment had the most.
Here, you couldn't trust anyone.
You couldn't go anywhere alone.
You had to lock every door in the house
All day long
And keep the key in your pocket
And never set it down.
Here, you couldn't sleep at night
Because of the drafty windows
And footsteps down the hall,
Most likely social services
Coming to take someone away.
But the worst feeling
Is when there is no sound.
There are no dogs barking,
No car doors slamming,
Just silence,
An eerie awkward silence
That tells you
Something's not right...
Something just isn't right.
That happened only once while I was there.
After that we slept in a car
Until we finally moved back in with mom.
And I'll never forget that place
With the yelling and screaming
And the crying.
Tonight, safe in my bed,
It's quiet
And I almost long to hear those noises,
Any of those noises,
All of those noises.
Anything to break this eerie silence.

A very interesting write. Good to see you're out of it. Unfortunately many are still in places like that...

Scary. Really scary. I like the perspective and the way you portrayed the fear.

What an incredibly frightening way to live,
and yet morbidly missing the noise of it.
This is a fantastic write, brought to life so vividly.
