Homage to the dead on Memorial Day

(Introduction)
We were all good men at first;
for better lives we did thirst.
Congratulated on our graduations
no way to continue our educations.
We decided of our own volition;
after receiving such a grand invitation,
that the military suited our station.
Our minds confirmed our formulations.
I was lucky I never got shot
my most exiting stories still remain in New York.
But for my dad and uncles it was much different.
Their stories of struggle were in front of them.
(Part one)
It took me a while to understand
why my uncle Nick was such a messed up man
alchohol he used to dim memories
of all the men he killed
that haunted his dreams.
He would wake up in the night
often covered in sweat
trying so hard to those times forget.
He'd take another drink of his bitter wine
and for a time that would ease his mind.
My cousin Matt would have a different ending
His life would find death after jokingly betting,
that he could out drink all of his piers
(A blood alchohol level of 73)
He once told me a story that was hard to believe
of the families of children and parents he ceased.
He took the all the mothers and tiny babies
put them in a mass grave and shot til deceased.
(Part two)
They told of life on the battle field
of being shot or catching schrapnel
of bomb explosions and tossing grenades.
They told me of sleeping in the mud and rain.
They grieved friends lost
family could not accept
war torn hearts that were filled with regret.
Yet with honor and pride
their duty they did
I can still hear their voices
even though they are dead
in the memories I carry
in my heart and my head.
So I pay due homage
and with great revelry
I take my moment of silence
to the dead and their grieved.
(Part 3)
I see the unmarked grave of the fallen sodier
in the catacombs of a darkened cave
His soul not at rest, his life lost in torment
Oh how his tortures must be grave.
I will visit him and give him comfort
I will remember his battles wrought.
I will sorrowfully grieve in love most patiently
so the memory of his deeds ne'er come to nought.
Dedicated to those who have fallen whether on the battle field or in spirit on this Memorial Day.

As this is quite graphic in its scenery, I get the impression that you wanted to get across the horror of their experience. I believe you did this very well, with thoughtfulness and care.
If there were anything I'd change about this, it would be the way it flits between rhyme and prose at periods. This, in my opinion, hampers the graphic expression of the experience in parts, as you fall into rhyme thus;
". . . parents he ceased.
/ shot til deceased."
Were rhyme ignored for this part, I believe scene could have been portrayed more vividly, and have more of an effect upon the reader.
This aside, I found it a gritty and altogether fitting work, which was ended with poignancy. |

God have mercy. I know many WW 2 vets, and a few from Vietnam. I can't begin to imagine what they lived. I know the feeling of waking in that cold sweat though. This is an honest and loving tribute. Well done, my friend.

Very heart wrenching. It's a great tribute to our fallen soilders and their families.
It reminds us all the price that's been paid for our freedom.
