Couldn't Help

Contributed by reprobate on Sunday, 30th May 2004 @ 01:29:44 PM in AEST
Topic: Grief

Just a wizened, weathered mobile bag of rags
Shuffling, stumbling along the cold, lifeless walk
Hugging close decaying dreams in ancient bags
Mistakes of the past for which he'll never atone

Crippled fingers clutch faded memories of before
Dried tears shed borne on a matted face of hurt
Once a man of light and love, that, alas, is no more
A lonely being that survives among the filth and dirt

Better times, they had truly enjoyed his presence
Life, laughter and a bit more, they filled his days
But some blight had fallen and poisoned his essence
An ugly pain demanding that he pays and pays

Fear me not, sad eyes cry beneath the grime
He's only asking for but a moment's pause
Losing his way being his only crime
Cruel revulsion his visage now does cause

Don't pity me, I heard him cough out
I'm here 'cause I forgot to care, you see
Spare me the gospel you're 'bout to spout
Give me some change then let me be

When the vision of that withered soul returned
I couldn't even help him nor ever make it right
The agony of his suffering in my heart forever burned
I cried for him, late last night.

There but for the odd roll of the dice . . .
It could be any of us in that position. I always wonder the stories out there behind those lonely lost faces. Great tribute to them, Mike.

You portrayed truth and reality beautifully. It is rather interesting to watch people out and about.**5 stars**
