The Little Boy and the Mushroom

Contributed by Elena on Saturday, 29th May 2004 @ 04:57:19 PM in AEST
Topic: FamilyPoems

A little boy in the forest
Sits, alone in the world,
The first time he ever held
A mushroom in his hand.
Of wet leaves and pepper it smells
And feels like washed-out velvet.
Yielding silently into powdery fibre,
It captures every teardrop
As his Dad’s ochre suitcase
Half-full and open on the bed
Finds its way back into his mind
And he dies of old age at 7.
A powdery fibre yielding silently
In another’s hand.

Velvety on the pallet. The meaning of words, poisonous tears of memories past over my cheeks.

Wow, beautiful. I love "And he dies of old age at 7".
