Eternity in Stages

Contributed by merry on Wednesday, 26th May 2004 @ 10:38:23 PM in AEST
Topic: insomniac

Mottled wasteland within glass eye hurricane
I lay down to die, no more fight left in me
Emptiness fills me up with something akin to sorrow
Without tears, or words to soothe the pain
Let it go, let it go – a voice whispers within me
And life slips past the door

Illusions unparalleled in life abound before me
Acrobats and lime green cats cavort in pairs
Pay me no heed as I stumble about in confusion
Is death not but eternal dreams; distorted truths
Played out on screens, in theaters now and forever
I have been duped one more

And God himself, a funny old fellow, quirks his brow
He could be Santa Claus, St Patrick, or Clark Gable
We had sandwiches in the lobby while
He questioned me in detail; I was afraid I was on trial
Did I have a good life? did I always do my very best?
He seemed to want to know

No, there is no waking up, at least not for awhile
St. Paul explained eternity and truth be damned, he did it with a smile
Angels hark and sing on cue, cherubim and seraphim join in
I can see right through myself, not but angel hair they said
I fell through death’s trap door with high expectations of so much more
Now I see that I was wrong

I thought this was very intense to read. Lots of divine imagery mixed in with the sublime and downright strange.
This is the kind of poem I like. Swirling, yet effective.
Good work, Merry.
