The True Meaning of Freedom

Contributed by fbijedi on Wednesday, 26th May 2004 @ 10:16:56 PM in AEST
Topic: Patriotic

How can we stand here, silent, afraid
Allowing the memories of honor to fade
Of those who fought, and bled, and died
In our own busy lives we obscure and hide

The sacrifices of so many, we forget
Are what brought us here, yet we still don't regret
That we no longer remember their lives and their pain
The things that they suffered, we leave them in vain

Freedom is not simply the absence of war
But the presence of payment to those of before
The shadow of hate lingers hard and long
Over the death of many, forever they're gone

No longer among us, they gave their lives
Yet we are unwilling to give of our time
A few moments to pay our respects and dues
Though we won the battle, in our hearts we did lose

A country without conflict, but deep inside
We have for years to ourselves lied
Of the truth of the matter, it is so plain
They did not die without leaving a stain

You may think it boring and foolish and old
To take a day in remembrance, our minds were sold
To a belief and an action, an idea and a stage
In which we refuse to turn back the page

Don't let them die without a cause
We should be thankful, take a moment to pause
We are left alive, it doesn't seem right
Why should we live, and they have to die?

But our hearts hold the answer, it is all true
There is a plan and a will for each of you
So remember their gift, their lives that they gave
And try on their foundation, a new life to pave
